our garden has finally reached the harvest time for most of our vegetables. we pulled off hundreds of little edamame (soy beans) as well as quite a few peppers. The strawberries have long since died but our watermelons are finally starting to sprout. Their long leafy vines smother everything else in the garden and wrap their sinewy tendrils around everything, choking the life out of them. that is always the problem with vining plants - last year we had the same trouble with the cucumbers.

the added ecological benefit is that we started making compost. ami bought all the right soil agents and compounds and so now all of our raw garbage goes into the compost heap. its a big rotting swell of banana peels, carrot shavings, egg shells and left over rice. yesterday ami was horrified to find it swarming with maggots as big as a human pinky finger. I tried to explain to her that the maggots are good for the soil, churning it and aerating it but she cant get over the fact that they are the single most vile creation on Gods green earth. so i threw a few of them out into the garden to make her happy. soon enough the birds were there to eat them up. its strange, beautiful sort of life cycle i suppose. and that same son-of-a-bitch cat that ate my pet fish who had survived outside through the coldest winter, and who is always making screaming sounds when he is fucking behind my house, came to chase the birds away. i guess he has his place in that circle of life too, but karma is gonna catch up to that stupid cat!
